Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Returns From Self-imposed Exile
May 24, 2008
The leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Morgan Tsvangirai, returned home on Saturday, ending a month-long self-imposed exile in Botswana and South Africa.
Tsvangirai arrived at Harare International Airport aboard a South African Airways flight shortly before 1pm and was met by senior officials of his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
The MDC leader had not returned to Zimbabwe since fleeing the country just after the March general election, citing security fears.
The MDC leader is expected to immediately launch his bid to wrestle power from President Robert Mugabe whom he defeated in the first round of presidential elections held in March, although less than the required figure to prevent a run-off.
The two politicians lock horns on June 27 in a presidential election run-off that could decide the fate of President Mugabe who has ruled Zimbabwe for 28 years.
