Zimbabwe Opposition Leader to Return Home Saturday
May 23, 2008
Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, said he would return home on Saturday to face President Robert Mugabe in a presidential election run-off set for June 27, APA learned on Thursday.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party leader announced in Johannesburg, South Africa that he planned to end his month-long exile and return to Zimbabwe to lead his election bid to oust incumbent President Robert Mugabe from power.
“I’m hoping all of you can join me to solve the political crisis we have (in Zimbabwe),” he said during a visit to victims of South Africa’s xenophobic attacks.
Tsvangirai narrowly defeated President Mugabe in a first round presidential poll held in March but failed to win more than 50 percent of the votes required to avoid a second round.
This is the second time in a week the MDC leader has announced plans to return home from South Africa where he has been based since April, only to see it aborted.
He postponed his return last Saturday, alleging that his party had discovered an assassination plot against him.
The Zimbabwe government has dismissed the assassination allegations as cheap politics meant to draw international attention to the MDC leader.
