Zimbabwe Opposition Wants International Court Try Perpetrators of Violence
April 25, 2008
Zimbabwe’s main opposition party on Friday promised to hand over to an international court, those perpetrating a terror campaign that has claimed the lives of at least 10 people since last month’s elections.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) released Friday names of eight of its supporters it claimed were killed by soldiers and ruling party militias since March 29.
The victims included a five-year-old boy who died after the hut he was sleeping in was torched by suspected ZANU PF supporters.
“We shall never forget their sacrifice and we shall act on their behalf to bring those committing crimes against humanity to an international court of justice,” MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, said in a statement accompanying the victims notice.
ZANU PF and the police have denied the violence claims, encouraging the MDC to prove the alleged attacks on its supporters.
The ruling party has instead accused the opposition of unleashing a terror campaign against ZANU PF supporters in rural areas.
At least 40 MDC activists have been arrested in connection with political violence cases.
Tsvangirai has not returned to Zimbabwe since a three-week-old election stalemate started early this month. He fears arrest if he sets foot on Zimbabwe soil.
He has been lobbying for international support to force President Robert Mugabe to release results of presidential elections held on March 29.
