Zimbabwe Police Arrest Scores of Opposition Politicians

April 25, 2008

Scores of Zimbabwe opposition activists were arrested Friday in a raid at the headquarters of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), APA has learned.

The raid by police in riot gear netted scores of MDC supporters and innocent tenants of Harvest House in the center of the capital, Harare.

Opposition sources said those arrested were mostly victims of state-sponsored violence who had gathered at the MDC offices to receive compensation from the party.

The MDC this week announced it had set up a fund to compensate supporters injured in attacks by alleged ZANU PF militias or whose properties have been destroyed.

The police and ZANU PF have accused MDC supporters of unleashing violence against ruling party supporters in rural Zimbabwe.
