Zimbabwe to Verify Presidential Poll Results Starting May Day
April 29, 2008
Verification of Zimbabwe’s much-awaited presidential election results will start on Thursday, according to the country’s state radio on Tuesday.
Radio Zimbabwe quoted Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chair George Chiweshe as saying the four presidential candidates or their representatives would be invited for verification of the results in the capital Harare on 1 May.
The delay in the verification of the presidential poll results could lead to a further delay in the announcement of the much-awaited outcome, observers said.
The results have already been delayed by a month, raising fears that the Zimbabwe government wants to rig the elections in favor of President Robert Mugabe, who the opposition claims lost the poll to Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change.
