Zimbabwe Will Not be on Security Council Agenda, Says Envoy

April 16, 2008

Zimbabwe will not be on the agenda of Wednesday’s United Nations Security Council meeting in New York, the country’s permanent representative to the UN said on Tuesday.

Boniface Chidyausiku told the state-run Zimbabwe Television that the troubled southern African country, currently in the middle of a two-week-long election dispute, would not feature during discussions at the joint UN Security Council-African Union Peace and Security Council meeting at the UN headquarters.

He insisted Zimbabwe was not a threat to world peace and would therefore not be discussed at the meeting, which would be chaired by South African President Thabo.

South Africa currently holds the rotating chair of the UN Security Council.

A stalemate over the release of results of presidential elections held on March 29 has dominated Zimbabwean politics for the past fortnight.

The dispute has centered on the delay by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to announce the winner of the presidential polls, 16 days after the elections were held.

The commission’s action has drawn international criticism of the Zimbabwean electoral authorities amid allegations the delay was a plot to rig the elections in favor of President Robert Mugabe.
