Zimbabwe Women Thank Mbeki, Zuma for Support

July 4, 2008

Women from Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party, known as the Women’s League (Zanu-PFWL), on Friday congratulated South African President Thabo Mbeki and his ruling African National Congress party leader, Jacob Zuma, for supporting the Zanu-PF government of President Robert Mugabe during the second round of the Zimbabwe’s presidential elections held last Friday.

“We really want to congratulate South African leaders for their unwavering support during and after the elections,” Oppah Muchinguri, who is attending the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) national conference in Bloemfontein, said on Friday.

The ANC women’s national conference started on Thursday and is set to elect a new ANC women’s league president. Anti-apartheid struggle veteran and former wife of Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is a favorite to take over the presidency of the Women’s League.

“The presidential elections were peaceful as confirmed by the Pan African observers’ mission and now President Robert Mugabe had been sworn-in as the legitimate leader,” Muchinguri said.

She said the ANC-WL must play a pivotal role in bringing Mbeki and Zuma together for a united ANC to emerge victorious in South Africa’s 2009 polls.

The ANC-WL and the Zanu-PF WL have a strong historical bond and the two must continue to fight for the emancipation of the African women, she added.

The Zanu-PF WL was also joined by other women’s leagues of the ruling parties in countries like Mozambique, Namibia and Botswana.

The women’s organizations said women in the continent need to be in the forefront of women’s economic emancipation and development in their countries.
