Zimbabwean Family Drowns on Crocodile-infested Limpopo River
April 13, 2008
Four members of a Zimbabwean family drowned while attempting to cross the crocodile-infested Limpopo River that separates Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Police sources said the incident on Friday, included young children and were from Beitbridge district on the border with South Africa, failed to make it to the other side after trying to swim across the swelling river on Friday.
Their bodies were found Saturday dumped on an island on the river.
Thousands of Zimbabweans cross every day into neighboring South Africa to escape mounting economic hardships at home.
A sizable number of the economic refugees use illegal paths on their way to seek better fortune in the regional economic powerhouse.
Zimbabwe is the middle of an eight-year economic crisis that is highlighted by world record inflation of more than 100,000 percent and shortages of food, fuel and electricity.
