A Zimbabwean film director and playwright has won an international award in recognition of his play raising public awareness on the scourge of HIV and AIDS.
Rory Kilalea was awarded the Susie Smith Memorial Prize for his play ‘Colours’.
The Susie Smith Memorial Prize was established by British relief agency Oxfam in 2007 and honors the life and work of Susie Smith who died in June 2006.
According to the organizers, Susie touched the lives of many people around the world in her 30-year career with Oxfam.
In her later years with the organization, she championed the cause of HIV/AIDS and pioneered new approaches to tackling the pandemic.
The prize aims to acknowledge and build on Susie’s sense of justice and commitment to sub-Saharan Africa and her talent and determination to challenge traditional thinking about HIV and AIDS.
Kilalea has worked with a number of organizations to promote education about HIV and sexual awareness.
He will be given the award at a ceremony to take place in London on October 30 where the play, directed by the author, will be performed.
